Puzzle Workshop is a program for the automated compiling of crosswords. It comes in two flavours:
Version 1
This is free, a demo can be downloaded from this site. It compiles freeform crosswords only, read more on the information pages (right).
Version 2
This does everything that Version 1 does, but can additionally create symmetrical, newspaper-style crosswords from a built-in dictionary, and can combine your own word list with dictionary words. It can be purchased on-line for £12, click here for the Version 2 pages.

The Clue List
With a crossword fill displayed, you can view or edit its clues. Select the Clues tab at the top of the screen. The Across words are visible initially. Another tab allows access to the Down words. Click on any word, and it will be highlighted on the grid (see screenshot). Alternatively, click on the crossword grid itself and the clue list scrolls to the selected word.
If there's already a clue assigned it will appear in an edit box at the bottom left of the screen. You can click in this box to either add a new clue, or to edit the existing text. Changes to clues are saved when you save the crossword.
Other Edit Options
From the Clues tab you can delete individual words, as follows: either click on the across/down list of words, or click on the crossword grid itself. Then press the keyboard Delete key. Having done this, you can complete the fill in a different way by clicking the Search for Improvement button. The Flip Across/Down button switches the grid rows and columns.
